NEWS

Shaolin Chan City has seen another very productive semester this fall. Many things have been happening- a boost in enrollment, successful events, a trip to the Shaolin Monastery, a new youth training program, and more.

We would like to extend a great thanks toward all new members and participants of the events organized by the center in this Fall Semester for their enthusiasm and deep interest in Traditional Shaolin Culture.

EVENTS

At the beginning of the Fall Semester, Shaolin Chan City held its second Shaolin Monastery Cultural Immersion Program. The program followed the study and training schedule from early morning to late evening endured at Shaolin in China, giving participants a rare opportunity to experience authentic Traditional Shaolin Culture right in St. Louis' backyard- Forest Park.

Group training inside World's Fair Pavilion, Forest Park.

The event was a great success, drawing participants from several states across the country, from as far as the East Coast, Massachusetts. Students from out-of-state were met at the Lambert Airport and taken to their hotels where they rested in preparation for the long day that would follow.

Training began early at 6:00am with a grueling run and morning calisthenics up and down the stairs of the World's Fair Pavilion, mimicking the mountain training which takes place surrounding the Shaolin Monastery.

Morning run through Forest Park at 6:00am.

After several training periods in the 90+ degree weather, participants finally took a well-deserved rest in the grass under the shade of the large park trees, and a relaxing session of meditation and Qigong.

At 7:00pm the end of the day finally came. A sweat-drenched group of Shaolin students returned to their normal daily lives after a cultural immersion experience like none other.

Congratulations to all those who made it through the day! We look forward to 2011's Shaolin Monastery Cultural Immersion Program, when we do it all again.

2010 RETURN TO SHAOLIN MONASTERY

As part of its goal to provide authentic Shaolin Cultural experience, SCC organized its first annual Return to Shaolin Monastery study trip in September. Several students were prepared to join this first trip, but many more are already making plans for the next.

The trip was organized and led by the SCC Founder & Director, Le Fujun. For the month of September training in Traditional Shaolin Wugong took place at the Shaolin Monastery Warrior Monks Reserve Force, the reserve base for the Shaolin Monastery led by 31st Generation Shaolin Monk, Ven. Shi Deyang.

A visit to the Shaolin Monastery was also led by Ven. Shi Deyang, the technical & spiritual guide of Shaolin Chan City, and a senior monk who has lived in the temple for nearly 30 years.

As a continual effort to spread the Shaolin Cultural experience, SCC will organize this trip annually. Those interested, members or nonmembers, are welcome to join in 2011.

CHAN STUDIES

A series of lectures and meditation instructions have been given as part of the Comprehensive Traditional Shaolin Culture Study Program at SCC. This Fall Semester continued with the Heart Sutra Lecture Series which began in late Spring Semester 2010.

Although it is one of the shortest Chan texts at only 260 characters, the depth of the Heart Sutra is great. Much detail was given by Le Fujun to the explanation and discussion of the Sutra character by character, in Chinese and English.

The lecture series was also prolonged due to the engagement of the audience during the Question & Answer sessions, a portion where students are encouraged to challenge the topic and delve into their nature.

NEW YOUTH PROGRAM

SCC saw a great increase in enrollment at the start of the Fall Semester, with student numbers almost doubling. As enthusiasm has grown and interest has been building, more and more requests for children's training have been made.

Fortunately, the center has been able to answer the call with a new Shaolin Youth Training Program for students ages 8-14 (younger students evaluated for admission).

The content of the youth program is the same as the adult class, but more structured within a shorter training session in order to take full advantage of children's high level of energy.

With the launching of this new program, SCC draws nearer to its goal of providing Traditional Shaolin Culture study and training to the widest audience possible. We look forward to the further growth of this new program in 2011!
