Shaolin Meditation

MEDITATION is the cornerstone of Shaolin practice. All else is an extension of it. From standing, walking, sitting, and lying down, to eating, working, talking, and practicing Traditional Shaolin Wugong.
Wugong as a part of authentic Shaolin training is considered a type of Chan Meditation- an action meditation. For this reason, the practice of Traditional Shaolin Wugong is termed "Wugong-Chan", the "Chan of Wugong".
Seated on the ground or cushion with legs crossed, or on a chair with legs straight, a student silently becomes still.
From within stillness comes movement, from within movement comes stillness. This is the beginning and end of Shaolin practice. In fact, there is no beginning, and no ending. To transcend motion and stillness is the highest meditation.
Seated Meditation (zuochan) is a practice of simplicity. Whether beginning or rounding off a full day's work, meditation is used to cleanse oneself. It is like taking a shower.
At the beginning of the day, the mind is made clear and fully aware, ready for whatever the day brings at any moment, to calmly meet the day with determination and kindness.
At the end of the day, just as one's clothes get dirty and wrinkled from working and commuting and must be washed, meditation serves the same purpose for cleansing the mind and relaxing the body.
Even just 10 minutes at the start and finish of each day is an indispensable method of returning to simplicity. Often times we are too overwhelmed with preoccupations and superficial things which cause unhappiness and mental unrest. All this plays to the mental chatter at the back of our minds. So long as this continues, we will not find peace and clarity in our lives. Meditation is therefore a method of returning to awareness of the moment as it passes, to calmly observe and recover one's true self.
Authentic Shaolin practice is a path leading one toward mental clarity and equanimity. By building a stronger body and a softer nature, the Shaolin disciplines as meditation aid a practitioner in finding inward stability and sharing it with those who surround us.
"Serenity is inside all of us; often we don't find it because we look for it outside."
-Shaolin Disciple, Shi Xingmi
