NEWS

Shaolin Chan City has seen very pleasant progress once again this Spring Semester. In its 3rd semester since opening, SCC has had a lot of exciting things happening- the celebration of the 1 year anniversary of the center, the growth of the new youth program, several successful events, the blossoming of members who participated in the center's first-ever academic year-end exams, and much more.

We would like to extend a great thanks toward all new members and participants of the events organized by the center in this Spring Semester for their enthusiasm and deep interest in Traditional Shaolin Culture.

ACTIVITIES

In addition to leading the regularly scheduled training program, SCC Founder & Director Le Fujun has been working to spread the Shaolin Culture in the area through community activities and events organized by the center and other organizations.

Washington University School of Medicine

As an active promoter of Qigong as an alternative form of Health Preservation and Natural Healing, Le Fujun was invited to teach Shaolin Qigong and meditation as part of an Alternative Medicine/Wellness workshop
at the Washington University School of Medicine in February.

University of Missouri - St. Louis

Having been educated on Traditional Shaolin Culture overseas at the Shaolin Monastery in China, Le Fujun is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese. This knowledge and language ability allowed him to act as a guest instructor in a two-day Chinese "Culture & Language Immersion" course at the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL), where students engaged in cultural activities using only the Mandarin language.

Le Fujun was able to inspire the language students with his speaking skills, meanwhile leading them through traditional Shaolin Qigong and Wugong exercises and introducing them to Shaolin Chan (zen) Philosophy during the event in March.

EVENTS

Shaolin Monastery Elder's 5th Anniversary

A memorial was held at SCC in March for the Shaolin Monastery Elder, Ven. Shi Suxi, to mark the 5th anniversary of his passing. Coinciding with ceremonies held at the Shaolin Monastery organized by Ven. Shi Deyang, his closest disciple, as well as in Italy and elsewhere around the world, a commemorative ceremony was conducted by the director Le Fujun.

The story of the Grandmaster's life was told, followed by a discussion on the
meaning and philosophy of the Shaolin Chan Culture our center represents as inherited through Ven. Shi Deyang. Also presented was a commemorative photo book Ven. Master Shi Deyang made for his master entitled 守望少林 Watching Over Shaolin, in which Le Fujun is also photographed.

Shaolin Qixingquan Seminar

A seminar was held at SCC in March, led by Le Fujun, on the 400 year old Shaolin set Seven Star Boxing (Chin.: 七星拳 Qīxīngquán), a boxing set that uses unique rooster style hand-shapes, body mechanics, and combat techniques.

Shaolin Monastery Cultural Immersion Program

Once again by popular demand Shaolin Chan City came back with its 3rd Shaolin Monastery Cultural Immersion Program. The 13 hour training day, lasting from 6:00am to 7:00pm, was held at the end of May this year.

The program followed the study and training schedule from early morning to late evening endured by the warrior monks at Shaolin in China, giving participants a rare opportunity to experience authentic Traditional Shaolin Culture right in St. Louis' backyard- Forest Park.

Prepare for the next one!

Academic Year-end Exams

Academic year-end exams were held at Shaolin Chan City for eligible students. This was the first exam conducted since the establishment of the center in January 2010. The first year and a half was spent on conditioning and building up the students' foundational skills before granting eligibility to test.

After intensive basic training, most participants exceeded the requirements of standards at their respective levels. Nearly all showed mastery of the programs studied. Congratulations to all students from Grandmaster Shi Deyang in China and Master Le Fujun.

2011 RETURN TO SHAOLIN MONASTERY

As part of its goal to provide authentic Shaolin Cultural experience, SCC organizes Return to Shaolin Monastery study trips each year.
