NEWS

Since the center's official opening and first class on January 4th, with participants attending from around the St. Louis area as well as out of state, Shaolin Chan City has seen a very productive Spring Semester and growth of the first members officially joining the program.

We would like to extend a great thanks toward all new members and participants of the events organized by the center in this first semester for their enthusiasm and deep interest in Traditional Shaolin Culture.

ACTIVITIES

In addition to leading the regularly scheduled training program, SCC Founder & Director Le Fujun has been working to spread the Shaolin Culture in the area through community activities and events organized by the center and other organizations.

At the University of Missouri - St. Louis, Le Fujun provided demonstrations of Shaolin Wugong and a discussion on the Culture of the Shaolin Monastery as a part of the Chinese section of the Foreign Language/Culture week in March.

He was later invited back to UMSL in April to give a lecture on the topic "What is Chan?" and the Chan/Wugong Culture of the Shaolin Monastery for the Chinese Culture Program at the University.

He was also invited as a guest performer for the 2010 Chinese New Year Party held at another area martial arts school, where the founding members have been studying at SCC since its establishment.

EVENTS

A special commemorative event was held on March 8th for the late Shaolin Monastery Elder, Ven. Shi Suxi (1924-2006), the Teaching-Grandfather of SCC. It was the fourth anniversary of his passing and a very important reminder of the tragedies endured to pass on our tradition through the last half century in China.

SCC also presented a seminar dedicated to the traditional Shaolin Monastery boxing set, Bodhidharma 18 Hands (Chin.: Dámó Shíbā Shǒu 达摩十八手), and Chan Philosophy in March, and in June a Shaolin Cultural Immersion Program open to the public held at Forest Park following the daily training schedule of the Shaolin Warrior Monks of China.

CHAN STUDIES

A series of lectures and meditation instructions have been given as part of the Comprehensive Traditional Shaolin Culture Study Program at SCC. The first lectures were an introduction to what Chan  is and how to practice.

The story of Bodhidharma (the Founding Patriarch of the Chan tradition in China) coming to China, his exchange with the emperor and subsequent meditations and instructions at Shaolin Monastery, was shared detailing the background and foundational teachings of the Chan tradition in Shaolin.

Following this introduction, a deeper look into Bodhidharma's teachings was taken with the thorough study of the Bloodstream Discourse (Chin.: xuèmàilùn 血脉论).

Currently (May onward) an ongoing series of lectures on the well-known Heart Sutra (Chin.: xīnjīng 心经) is being given, taking the Chinese translation of Tang Dynasty monk Ven. Xuanzang as a direct reference.

CULTURE ARTICLES

Le Fujun is the author of numerous articles on Traditional Shaolin Culture, History, Philosophy, and Arts, many of which have been published on the SCC blogsite: www.shaolinchancity.blogspot.com

This Spring Semester two additional culture articles have been added and are available for reading online.

Article 1: "Amituofo in Shaolin Chan"

Article 2: "Shaolin Warrior Ethics"
